Early Morning Seoul — What's Open Before 10am (2026)
You've just landed at Incheon at 5 AM. Or you're wide awake at 6 AM because jet lag doesn't care about your itinerary. Or you're a morning person who wants to see Seoul before the crowds hit. The problem: most of Seoul doesn't open until 10-11 AM. Restaurants, shops, attractions — almost everything is closed before 10.
But "almost everything" isn't "everything." Here's what's actually open and worth doing in Seoul before the city wakes up.
The Early Morning Timeline
| Time | What's Open |
|---|---|
| 24/7 | Convenience stores (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven), jjimjilbangs, some haejangguk restaurants |
| 5:00 AM | First subway trains start running |
| 5:30 AM | Bukhansan and Namsan hiking trails (always open) |
| 6:00 AM | Han River parks, Cheonggyecheon Stream, Seoul City Wall trail |
| 7:00 AM | Paris Baguette, Tous les Jours (bakery chains), some cafes |
| 8:00 AM | Starbucks, chain cafes, Gwangjang Market food stalls start setting up |
| 9:00 AM | Gyeongbokgung Palace (opens 9:00), Bukchon Hanok Village (outdoor, always accessible) |
| 10:00 AM | Most restaurants, National Museum, War Memorial, shopping areas |
If You Arrive at Incheon at 5 AM
This is one of the most common scenarios — many flights from Southeast Asia, Australia, and the US arrive between 4-6 AM. Here's your plan:
Option A: Head Straight to Seoul
- 5:20 AM — First AREX train departs. Take the All-Stop train (₩4,750, T-money works) or wait for the Express at 6:00 AM (₩9,500, 43 min non-stop). See our airport to city guide.
- Before leaving the airport — grab a SIM card or activate your eSIM, buy a T-money card at the convenience store in arrivals, get a WOWPASS if you want cashless payments. See our travel essentials checklist.
- 6:00-7:00 AM in Seoul — drop luggage at your hotel (most have luggage storage even before check-in) or at a subway station locker (₩2,000-4,000).
- 7:00 AM — breakfast at Paris Baguette near your hotel, or convenience store breakfast (triangle kimbap + coffee = ₩2,500).
- 7:30-9:00 AM — walk Bukchon Hanok Village (outdoor, no opening hours), Cheonggyecheon Stream, or Namsan Park.
- 9:00 AM — Gyeongbokgung Palace opens. You'll have it nearly to yourself for the first 30 minutes.
Option B: Rest First at a Jjimjilbang
If you're exhausted and need a shower + nap before exploring:
- Spa on Air (Incheon Airport, Terminal 1 basement) — ₩18,000, open 24/7. Shower, sauna, sleep on heated floor. Good for 2-3 hour rest before heading into Seoul.
- Dragon Hill Spa (Yongsan, central Seoul) — ₩15,000 weekday / ₩18,000 weekend, open 24/7. Much larger, with outdoor pools, multiple saunas, and a full restaurant. Take AREX to Seoul Station → Line 1 to Yongsan (5 min).
- Siloam Sauna (Seoul Station area) — ₩12,000, open 24/7. The budget option. Basic but clean, 5 min walk from Seoul Station. Popular with backpackers.
Jjimjilbangs provide towels, change of clothes, locker, and access to all facilities. Bring nothing except your locker key wristband. See our backpacker guide for more on using jjimjilbangs as accommodation.
Best Early Morning Activities
Sunrise Hikes (from 5:30 AM)
Korea's hiking culture starts early — you'll see Korean ajummas and ajeossis on the trails by 6 AM. These are all free and accessible by subway:
- Namsan Park — easiest. 30-min walk from Myeongdong Station to the base of N Seoul Tower. Sunrise views over the city. The tower observation deck doesn't open until 10 AM, but the outdoor viewing terrace is always accessible.
- Bukhansan National Park — more serious hike (2-3 hours to peak). Take Line 3 to Gupabal Station, Exit 1. The Bukhansan sunrise is one of Seoul's best views. Start by 5:30 AM for sunrise.
- Inwangsan Mountain — shorter (1-1.5 hours), connects with Seoul City Wall trail. Take Line 3 to Dongnimmun Station. Shamanist shrine at the top.
- Seoul City Wall Trail — walk along the 600-year-old fortress wall. Multiple access points. The Naksan section (near Hyehwa Station) has sunrise views over Dongdaemun.
Morning Walks (no hiking required)
- Bukchon Hanok Village — the narrow alleyways of traditional Korean houses are actually BETTER in early morning. No tourist crowds, soft light, quiet. Residents are still sleeping so be respectful (no loud talking before 9 AM). From Anguk Station, Exit 2.
- Cheonggyecheon Stream — 11 km urban stream running through central Seoul. Walk along the path from Gwanghwamun to Dongdaemun. Peaceful at 6-7 AM, with only joggers and office workers.
- Han River Parks — cycling paths, outdoor fitness equipment, open grass areas. Yeouido Hangang Park and Ttukseom are the most popular. Bike rental opens at 6 AM (₩3,000/hour).
- Seoul Forest — Seongsu-dong's big park. Deer garden, wetlands, walking paths. Beautiful at sunrise. From Seoul Forest Station, Exit 3.
Temples (from 4-5 AM)
Buddhist temples are the earliest-opening spots in Seoul — monks begin morning prayers before dawn:
- Jogyesa Temple (Jongno) — Seoul's main Buddhist temple. Free entry, always open. Morning chanting ceremony starts around 4:30 AM. Even if you don't attend the ceremony, the grounds are peaceful and lit by lanterns at dawn. 5 min walk from Anguk Station.
- Bongeunsa Temple (Gangnam, across from COEX) — free, opens early. Offers temple stay programs with 4:30 AM morning prayers.
