East vs West Jeju 2026: Which Side to Base In (Honest Comparison)

Korea Travel··Updated 2026-04-30·By Team Korea Insider

Jeju's east coast and west coast feel like different countries. The east is volcanic, dramatic, sunrise-oriented, with UNESCO sites and quiet fishing villages. The west is cafe-strung, beach-tropical, sunset-oriented, with the most photographed coastline in Korea. If you have 3 days you can sample both, but most travelers should pick a side for their trip's center of gravity. This guide compares them in plain English.

East Jeju — UNESCO & Sunrise

East Jeju Yongnuni Oreum landscape

The east coast is the "natural Jeju" — three of Jeju's UNESCO sites are here (Seongsan Ilchulbong, Manjanggul Cave, Geomun Oreum), the oreum density is highest, and the villages feel less touched by tourism than the west.

Why Choose East

  • Seongsan Ilchulbong sunrise. The most photographed sunrise in Korea. You stay nearby and walk to the gate before dawn.
  • Multiple UNESCO sites in 30 minutes. Seongsan + Manjanggul + Geomun Oreum.
  • Oreum cluster. Yongnuni, Darangshi, Hamdeok-area oreum all within 15 min.
  • Less crowded. Outside Seongsan itself, east coast feels quiet.
  • Best for hiking-focused trips. 4 of the 5 oreum in our hiking guide are east.

What You'll Miss

  • The famous Aewol cafe scene
  • The most photogenic beaches
  • The Jungmun resort cluster (south)
  • Hallasan trailheads (mostly south/west)

West Jeju — Cafes & Sunset

West Jeju Hyeopjae Beach with turquoise water

The west coast is the "design Jeju" — turquoise beaches, ocean-view cafes, boutique pensions, and sunset over the Pacific. It's where most Jeju Instagram photos come from.

Why Choose West

  • Hyeopjae Beach. Korea's most beautiful beach, with white sand and Biyangdo Island offshore.
  • Aewol cafe trail. 50+ ocean-view cafes on a 5km coast road.
  • Saebyeol Oreum. The Jeju Fire Festival cone — easy 30-minute hike.
  • Fastest from airport. 30–40 min, you're on a beach by lunch.
  • Sunset oriented. All your cafes face west.
  • Hallim Park + caves. Family-friendly indoor option for rainy days.

What You'll Miss

  • Seongsan sunrise
  • Manjanggul Cave
  • Most oreum (clustered east)
  • The dramatic, less-touristed feel of the east

Visiting Both in One Trip

If you have 3+ days, you can do both. Two patterns work:

Pattern A: Single Base + Day Trips

Stay 3 nights in Jeju City (north) and day-trip both coasts. East day = Seongsan + Manjanggul + Hamdeok. West day = Hyeopjae + Aewol cafes. Keeps your luggage in one place.

Pattern B: Two Bases

2 nights east (Seongsan area) → 2 nights west (Aewol or Hyeopjae). More driving with luggage, but you wake up in different worlds. Most atmospheric option for a 4–5 day trip.

For a clean 3-day plan that touches both, see our Jeju 3-Day Itinerary — Day 1 east, Day 2 south, Day 3 west.

Where to Stay (East vs West)

  • East: Seongsan area or Hamdeok village. Sunrise pensions, mid-range hotels, fewer chain options.
  • West: Aewol, Hyeopjae village, or Hallim. Boutique pensions, design-y stays.
  • Both: Jeju City (north) — equidistant base for day-tripping.

FAQ

If I can only do one side, which?
West for first-timers (faster from airport, more variety, easier with luggage). East for second-time visitors or specifically sunrise-focused trips.

What about the south coast?
The south is its own thing — waterfalls, the Jungmun resort cluster, and Seogwipo city. It's neither east nor west. See our Where to Stay in Jeju for the full breakdown.

How long does it take to drive from one side to the other?
About 1 hour 15 minutes via Highway 12 (coastal road) or 1 hour via Highway 99 (inland through Hallasan).

Are the beaches different east vs west?
West beaches (Hyeopjae) are postcard-turquoise. East beaches (Hamdeok) are similar but slightly less famous. Both have the same kind of water — Hyeopjae is more crowded but more iconic.

What about Udo Island?
Udo is a small island off Seongsan (east coast). 15-min ferry from Seongsan port. Day-trippable. Adds a coastal dimension to an east-coast itinerary.
