Best Beaches in Jeju 2026: Complete Guide (Hyeopjae, Hamdeok, Jungmun)
Jeju has Korea's only properly tropical beaches — emerald water clear enough to see your feet, white-and-black volcanic sand, and pine-clad cliffs that look more like Okinawa than the Yellow Sea. There are about a dozen named beaches scattered around the island; five matter, and each is good for a different thing. This guide covers what's actually different between them so you don't waste a beach day on the wrong one.

1. Hyeopjae Beach (West) — The Postcard
The most photographed beach on Jeju. The water is genuinely the colour of postcards, with Biyangdo Island sitting offshore as a perfect compositional element. Sand is fine and white. The downside: by 11am in summer it's shoulder-to-shoulder. Go at sunrise or after 5pm to actually enjoy it.
- Vibe: Iconic, crowded, gorgeous water
- Best for: Photos, swimming in shallow water, families with small kids
- Skip if: You hate crowds in July–August
- Pair with: Aewol cafes (15 min drive), Hallim Park (5 min walk)
2. Hamdeok Beach (East) — The All-Rounder
The east coast's answer to Hyeopjae — similar turquoise water, slightly less famous, marginally less crowded. The bay is shallow and well-protected, which makes it Jeju's best beach for kids and non-swimmers. Excellent rotating cafes and restaurants line the back streets.
- Vibe: Family-friendly, food-adjacent
- Best for: Kids, casual swims, beachfront cafes
- Skip if: You want big-wave swimming or surfing
- Pair with: Manjanggul Cave (15 min drive), Bijarim Forest
3. Jungmun Saekdal Beach (South) — The Resort Beach
Bigger surf, darker volcanic sand, and lined with Jeju's main resort hotel cluster (Lotte Hotel, Shilla Stay, Hyatt). This is where surf lessons happen — Jungmun has Jeju's most consistent waves. Less of a turquoise-photo beach; more of an actual beach-day beach where you swim, surf, and watch sunset.
- Vibe: Resort-adjacent, surfing, sunset
- Best for: Surfing, ocean swimming, walk-from-hotel access
- Skip if: You want still water for kids
- Pair with: Cheonjeyeon Falls (5 min), Yakcheonsa Temple
4. Iho Tewoo Beach (North) — The Sunset Spot
The closest beach to Jeju International Airport (12 minutes by taxi) and Jeju City. Mostly known for its two horse-shaped lighthouses (one red, one white) at the harbor entrance — the most photographed sunset in Jeju. Sand is darker (volcanic). The water is fine but not the postcard turquoise of Hyeopjae.
- Vibe: Urban, sunset photos, evening walk
- Best for: Sunset, layover-day beaches, families with kids
- Skip if: You came to Jeju for tropical-feeling water
- Pair with: Dongmun Market dinner (10 min drive)
5. Gimnyeong Beach (East) — The Quiet One
The east coast's hidden gem. Smaller than Hamdeok or Hyeopjae, with the same emerald water but a fraction of the crowds. Strong winds make it Jeju's best kitesurfing beach, and there's a small surf scene. Camping ground attached.
- Vibe: Quiet, windswept, surf-curious
- Best for: Photographers, kitesurfing, escape-the-crowd days
- Skip if: You want amenities or restaurants on the beach
- Pair with: Manjanggul Cave (10 min), Seongsan Ilchulbong (30 min)
How to Get to Each Beach
| Beach | From Jeju Airport | From Jeju City | From Seogwipo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyeopjae | 40 min | 40 min | 1 hr |
| Hamdeok | 30 min | 20 min | 1 hr |
| Jungmun | 1 hr | 1 hr | 15 min |
| Iho Tewoo | 12 min | 10 min | 1 hr |

Rental car is by far the easiest way to beach-hop. Jeju public buses connect most beaches but service is hourly and slow. From the airport a rental car is ₩50,000–80,000/day.
Where to Stay Near the Beaches

- Jungmun resort cluster: 5-star hotel inventory (Lotte, Hyatt, Shilla). Best for resort-style beach days.
- Jeju City: 12 min to Iho Tewoo. Best base if you're spending more time on attractions than beaches.

Practical Tips: Season, Gear, Etiquette
- Season: Beach season is officially July 1 – August 31 (lifeguards on duty, water sports rented). Outside that you can still walk and photograph but swim at your own risk.
- Sand colour varies. Hyeopjae is white, Iho Tewoo is dark, Hamdeok is mixed — fine if you want it for your photos.
- Tides matter at Hyeopjae. At low tide you can walk most of the way to Biyangdo Island; at high tide you can't. Check the tide chart.
- Sunscreen + reef-safe. Jeju is starting to enforce environmental rules around sunscreens at popular beaches.
- Cash + T-money. Most beach vendors accept card now, but small parking lots are sometimes cash-only.
- Don't pick the volcanic rocks. Black volcanic stones are protected; locals get genuinely upset if tourists collect them.
