Where to Stay in Pyeongchang — Ski Resorts & Mountain Stays (2026)
Pyeongchang is Korea's ski country — a highland plateau in Gangwon-do at 700–800m elevation that hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The three main resorts are Alpensia (the Olympic venue, now operated as a resort with ski slopes, an indoor water park, and the concert hall used during the Games), Yongpyong (the largest ski resort in Korea, with the widest variety of runs and the longest history), and High1 in adjacent Jeongseon county (smaller, higher altitude, better suited to advanced skiers). All three are accessible from Seoul by KTX (Jinbu Station for Alpensia and Yongpyong, about 75 minutes; Gohan Station for High1, about 90 minutes), with shuttle buses connecting the station to each resort. In summer, the same highland areas offer hiking trails, whitewater rafting on the Donggang River, and temperatures 5–10°C cooler than Seoul — making Pyeongchang a genuine four-season destination rather than just a ski destination.
Choosing a resort base
Where you stay depends on which resort you're skiing. The three resorts are not adjacent — Alpensia/Yongpyong are clustered near Bongpyeong (Daegwallyeong area), while High1 is in Jeongseon county, about 45 minutes east. Staying at your chosen resort is the most convenient approach in winter: all three have on-slope or slope-adjacent accommodation (lodge rooms, condominiums, or nearby pensions). Yongpyong has the broadest range of on-mountain accommodation at different price points. Alpensia's facilities are more concentrated and include the original Olympic athletes' village converted to hotel use. High1 is the most self-contained — the resort village has everything on-site and there's less reason to leave. For non-skiers, Bongpyeong town (between Alpensia and Yongpyong) has cheaper pension-style accommodation and is popular with Korean families in summer for buckwheat noodle restaurants and the Hyoseok Cultural Festival.
