Where to Stay in Gangneung & Sokcho — East Coast (2026)
Gangneung sits on Korea's east coast facing the Sea of Japan, roughly 2 hours from Seoul by KTX — a distance that changed dramatically when the high-speed rail opened for the 2018 Winter Olympics. The city has three distinct draws: Anmok Coffee Street (a kilometre-long strip of independent cafes on the beachfront that became a national pilgrimage point), Gyeongpo Beach (the area's main swimming beach, popular with Korean families in summer), and proximity to Sokcho and Seoraksan National Park (another 45 minutes north by bus). Gangneung also has a serious food scene — the Jungang Market is the best place to eat in town, and the city has a quiet pride in its local specialties (sun tofu, potato tteok) that goes well beyond the coffee strip.
Where to stay in Gangneung
Gangneung city center (near Gangneung Station and the bus terminal) is the most practical base — it puts you within a short taxi of the coffee street, has the best range of accommodation options at different price points, and provides easy bus connections north to Sokcho. The Gyeongpo Beach area (Gyeongpo-dong, 10 minutes by bus from the station) has more resort-style accommodation and a beachfront feel, but the strip is quieter outside of July and August. For the coffee street specifically, Anmok is between the city center and the beach — walkable from Gyeongpo-dong, a 10-minute taxi from the station. A handful of boutique pensions near the pine forest at Gyeongpo are excellent but book out fast in summer; these need to be reserved months ahead for peak season visits.
Day trips from Gangneung
Sokcho is 45 minutes north by intercity bus (₩4,500, departs Gangneung Bus Terminal regularly) and makes an easy day trip — the Abai Village lagoon, Sokcho Jungang Market, and Cheongcho Lake are all accessible within a half-day. Seoraksan National Park is a further 20 minutes from Sokcho by local bus; for the full park experience, staying in Sokcho rather than doing a day trip from Gangneung gives you an earlier start on the most popular trails. Jeongdongjin (famous for its cliff-edge train station and the Sunrise Park) is 30 minutes south of Gangneung by local train — manageable as a half-day from the city.
