Where to Stay in Gangwon-do — Mountain & Beach Resorts (2026)
Gangwon-do is Korea's mountain and east coast province — the part of the country that Koreans themselves visit for fresh air, seafood, and skiing. It stretches from the DMZ in the north to the central highlands, and from the Taebaek mountain range down to a long stretch of east coast beaches. The province has three distinct travel modes: east coast (Gangneung, Sokcho, Samcheok) for beach, seafood, and coffee culture; mountain (Seoraksan, Odaesan) for hiking and foliage; and ski country (Pyeongchang, Jeongseon) for winter sports. The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang upgraded train infrastructure significantly — the KTX now reaches Gangneung in under 2 hours from Seoul, making the east coast accessible as an overnight trip rather than requiring a full week.
How to plan your Gangwon-do base
Most travelers pick a single area rather than trying to cover the province. Gangneung works as a hub if you want beach, coffee culture, and day-trip range to Sokcho and Seoraksan. Sokcho is better if Seoraksan hiking is the primary goal — the park entrance is a short bus ride from town. Pyeongchang (specifically the Alpensia/Yongpyong resort area) only makes sense in ski season (December to February); in summer and autumn it's quieter and priced accordingly. This hub page lists properties spread across the province; use the dedicated area guides below for more detailed picks in each zone.
When to visit Gangwon-do
Each season delivers something different: summer (July–August) is peak beach season with warm water and crowded Gyeongpo and Naksan beaches; autumn (October) is the best time for Seoraksan foliage — the park's upper ridges turn red and gold and the hiking is outstanding, but accommodation books fast; winter (December–February) is ski season at Alpensia and Yongpyong, with rates at 2–3x the off-peak level; spring (April–May) is the most pleasant time for hiking at moderate temperatures with the least crowds. Avoid the east coast beaches during the summer Korean school holidays (late July to mid-August) unless you've booked months ahead.
