Jongno is where Seoul's 600-year history comes alive — five grand palaces, Bukchon's traditional hanok streets, Insadong's art galleries, and the National Folk Museum. Most first-time visitors spend their first full day here.

## Seoul's palace district — five palaces and how to choose Jongno holds four of Seoul's five grand Joseon-era palaces within walking distance of each other. Gyeongbokgung is the largest and most photographed — its changing-of-the-guard ceremony runs at 10am and 2pm. Changdeokgung (UNESCO World Heritage) is arguably more beautiful, with a preserved rear garden (Huwon) that requires a separate guided tour ticket. Deoksugung is smaller but notable for its combination of Joseon halls and Western-style stone buildings, and its moat path is one of Seoul's most pleasant short walks. Changgyeonggung and Gyeonghuigung round out the five. A combined ticket covers Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, and Deoksugung for ₩10,000 — valid for 1 month. Wearing hanbok grants free entry to all five. ## Bukchon Hanok Village — what it is and how to visit without the crowds Bukchon is a residential neighbourhood of several hundred traditional hanok houses set on the hillside between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung. It's not a theme park — people live here, which is both its appeal and the reason residents have posted signs asking for quiet. The most photographed alley is Gahoe-ro 11-gil (view #3 on the tourist map). Arrive before 9am or after 5pm to avoid the worst crowds and to be respectful of residents. The Bukchon Cultural Center (free) is a good first stop for context, and the streets descending toward Insadong are lined with cafes in converted hanok. ## Jongno in one day — a logical walking route Start at Gyeongbokgung Palace when it opens at 9am. Walk north through the palace grounds and exit toward Bukchon Hanok Village. Follow Gahoe-ro downhill to Anguk Station, then continue south along Insadong-gil — the main art street, lined with galleries, craft shops, and traditional tea houses. Stop at Ssamzigil, the multi-level open-air craft market. From Insadong, Jogyesa Temple (Korea's main Buddhist temple) is a 5-minute walk west. End the day at Cheonggyecheon Stream, the restored urban waterway that runs east from Gwanghwamun — walking its banks at dusk is one of Seoul's quieter pleasures.
