Where to Stay in Jongno — Hotels Near Palaces & Bukchon (2026)
Jongno-gu is Seoul's historic core — the district that contains Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insadong, and Gwangjang Market. For first-time visitors building a culture-and-history itinerary, staying in Jongno means the main attractions are walkable: Gyeongbokgung is reachable on foot from most hotels in the district, and the Bukchon–Insadong–Cheonggyecheon corridor can be done entirely without the subway. Subway Lines 3, 5, and the Gyeongbokgung station on Line 3 give efficient connections to the rest of Seoul.
Why stay in Jongno
Proximity to the palace district is the defining advantage. The changing of the guard ceremony at Gyeongbokgung happens at 10am and 2pm — staying in Jongno means you can walk over in 15 minutes rather than commuting from Hongdae or Gangnam. Hanbok rental shops cluster along the alley between Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon, and the best ones fill by mid-morning on weekends — again, walkability matters. The area is also quieter than Hongdae or Myeongdong after 9pm, which suits travelers on an early-start, sightseeing-heavy schedule. Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses in converted hanok buildings near Bukchon to full-service business hotels near Gwanghwamun.
Who Jongno suits — and who it doesn't
Good fit: First-time Seoul visitors (maximum proximity to the headline cultural sites), history and architecture enthusiasts (palaces, royal tombs, and Jongmyo Shrine all within the district), travelers who want quiet evenings and early starts, and anyone specifically targeting the spring or autumn palace seasons when advance tickets sell out. Poor fit: Nightlife-focused travelers (the area is largely quiet after 9pm — Hongdae and Itaewon are significantly livelier), and budget backpackers who don't specifically need palace proximity (Hongdae has cheaper guesthouses with comparable subway coverage). Jongno is arguably the single best Seoul base for a first visit; it's less obviously optimal for travelers whose priorities are shopping or nightlife.
