## Korean BBQ in Hongdae — a different crowd, a different atmosphere Hongdae's BBQ scene is shaped by the neighbourhood: university students, tourists, and the late-night crowd that comes for the clubs and live music venues. Most BBQ restaurants here are open until 2am or later and geared toward groups — expect lively, noisy dining rooms rather than the quieter galbi-specialist houses you'd find in Mapo or Mapo-gu's residential streets. Prices are generally mid-range, and samgyeopsal (pork belly) dominates over galbi. ## What to order — cuts and combinations Samgyeopsal and geunko-gui (thick-cut pork belly) are the standards in Hongdae. Most restaurants also offer spicy variations (yangnyeom samgyeopsal, marinated in gochujang paste) that pair well with the somaek (soju-beer mix) ordering culture. If you want beef, look for chadolbaegi (thin-sliced brisket) — it cooks faster than galbi and costs less. Wrap your meat in ssam (perilla leaves and sesame leaves, not just lettuce) and ask the server to bring more if they run out; refills are usually free or low-cost. ## When to go — timing for Hongdae BBQ Hongdae restaurants fill up quickly from 6pm onwards, especially on weekends. The best window is 5–6pm for a quieter meal, or after 10pm when the first dinner wave clears out. Many places don't take reservations, so arrive early or be prepared to wait.
