## Why Gangneung became Korea's coffee capital Gangneung's reputation as Korea's coffee city started with a barista championship win in the early 2000s: the winner opened a cafe on Anmok Beach, and a cluster of specialty roasters followed. Today the strip has 40+ independent roasters, most sourcing directly and roasting in-house — a concentration found nowhere else in Korea outside Seoul's Seongsu district. ## What to expect on the Anmok Beach coffee street The cafes run along a 500-metre stretch of road parallel to the East Sea, most with ocean-facing windows and outdoor seating. The style is consistently specialty — single-origin filter coffee and pour-overs are the norm, and many roasters display their current bean origin prominently.
