## Dakgalbi — what the dish is and where it comes from Dakgalbi is marinated chicken stir-fried with gochujang (chilli paste), sweet potato, cabbage, green onion, and rice cakes on a large iron griddle, usually at the table. The dish originated in Chuncheon in the 1960s as an affordable alternative to pork and beef BBQ. Today Chuncheon's Dakgalbi Street — a pedestrian lane near the city centre — has 30+ restaurants serving the dish, most using family recipes that have barely changed in decades. ## How Dakgalbi Street works All the restaurants on the strip serve essentially the same dish at similar prices (around ₩13,000–15,000 per person). The key differences are the griddle size, the level of spice, and whether the restaurant adds mozzarella cheese (a popular modern variation). Most places have visible signage in English or picture menus. At the end of the meal, ask the server to add fried rice (볶음밥, bokkeumbap) — they'll stir it into the leftover sauce on the same griddle, and it's one of the best bites of the meal. ## Combining dakgalbi with the rest of Chuncheon Chuncheon is a 1.5-hour ITX train journey from Seoul Station. Most visitors combine Dakgalbi Street with a lake cruise on Uiam Lake or a visit to Nami Island (a 30-minute ferry from Chuncheon). The dakgalbi lunch typically takes 45–60 minutes. Restaurants open from 11am and the lunch rush peaks around noon-1pm — arriving just before 11:30 avoids the worst waits on weekends.
