Where to Stay in Chungcheong-do — Hot Springs & Heritage (2026)
Chungcheong-do is the province between Seoul and the southern regions — two provinces technically (North and South Chungcheong), but treated as a single travel zone by most visitors passing through. The area is best known internationally for Gongju and Buyeo, the two capitals of the ancient Baekje Kingdom (18 BC–660 AD), both of which hold UNESCO World Heritage status as part of the Baekje Historic Areas. Compared to Gyeongju (the Silla kingdom capital, which draws far more tourists), the Baekje sites are remarkably uncrowded — the Gongju Gongsanseong fortress, the royal tombs at Songsan-ri, and the Buyeo Neungsa Temple site can be visited without the crowds that overwhelm Gyeongju during peak season. Beyond the heritage sites, Chungcheong-do has Suanbo Hot Springs (one of Korea's oldest thermal spa towns, in the mountains near Chungju), Deogyusan National Park (excellent autumn foliage and ski resort), and Danyang (a river-gorge town popular with Korean tourists for adventure activities and scenic cruises).
Where to base yourself in Chungcheong-do
The province lacks a single dominant city for travelers — Daejeon (covered separately) is the largest city and transport hub, but the main cultural sites require separate positioning. Gongju is the natural base for Baekje heritage: the fortress, royal tombs, and National Museum are all within the town, and it's compact enough to explore on foot. Buyeo is 30 minutes southwest of Gongju and can be done as a day trip from there, though overnight stays at one of the small inns near the Baekje ruins give you quiet mornings before tour groups arrive. For Suanbo Hot Springs, accommodation is clustered directly at the spa resort town — there's no nearby city to use as a base. Danyang has guesthouses right on the river gorge, with the Dodam Sambong rock formation a short walk from the town center.
Getting around Chungcheong-do
Chungcheong-do is most easily navigated by rental car — public transit reaches the main cities but the heritage sites, national parks, and spa towns are spread across rural areas not well served by trains. From Seoul, Gongju is about 90 minutes by express bus from Seoul Central City Terminal; Buyeo is 2 hours. Daejeon is the rail hub (KTX, 50 minutes from Seoul) and renting a car from Daejeon is the practical approach for covering multiple sites in the region in one trip.
