Quick Summary

Overall verdict Excellent — one of Korea's most underrated travel months. Stunning foliage at lower elevations, crisp clear weather, and noticeably fewer crowds than October
Weather feel Cool and dry throughout — 5–15°C in Seoul, colder mornings and evenings by late November; excellent conditions for walking and sightseeing
Best for foliage Bulguksa (Gyeongju), Changdeokgung Secret Garden (Seoul), Naejangsan National Park — peak colour shifts from mountains to city parks and temples in November
Don't miss Jinju Namgang Yudeung Lantern Festival — one of Korea's most spectacular night events, held along the Nam River in early November
Biggest advantage Shoulder season pricing kicks in — hotels and flights are significantly cheaper than October, with better availability
Watch out for Late November can be cold — temperatures drop near freezing at night and layers are essential; ski resorts begin opening but skiing doesn't hit stride until December

November is the quiet secret of Korean travel. While October gets all the marketing — and the crowds to match — November is when the autumn colour reaches the places most tourists actually visit: the palace gardens of Seoul, the temple complexes of Gyeongju, the hillside neighbourhoods of Busan. The mountains peaked weeks ago, but the cities are glowing. Prices have dropped. The weekend queues at Gyeongbokgung are half what they were. And the Jinju Lantern Festival turns a river in South Gyeongsang Province into one of the most extraordinary light displays in East Asia.

If you are flexible on when to visit Korea in autumn, November is the smarter pick.

Is November a good time to visit Korea?

Yes — and arguably more comfortable than October for many travellers. Here is the honest breakdown:

Advantages:

  • Late autumn foliage peaks at lower elevations — city parks, palace gardens, and coastal temples are at their best
  • Noticeably fewer tourists than October at all major sites, including Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon Hanok Village
  • Hotels and flights shift to shoulder-season pricing — significant savings over the October peak
  • Crisp, dry weather with excellent visibility — ideal for photography and outdoor exploration
  • Jinju Lantern Festival is one of Korea's most atmospheric events
  • No major holidays to disrupt transport or accommodation availability
  • Gyeongju in November is near-perfect: mild, manageable crowds, autumn colour around the historic sites

Disadvantages:

  • Temperatures drop sharply in the second half of the month — late November evenings can approach freezing in Seoul
  • Foliage in mountainous regions (Seoraksan, Jirisan) is finished — if you missed the high-mountain colour, November is too late
  • Daylight hours shorten — sunset around 5:30 PM by end of November limits afternoon activity windows
  • Ski season has not yet hit peak conditions — good snow typically waits until January

Korea weather in November

November is Korea's clearest month. The monsoon is a distant memory, summer haze is gone, and the skies are a sharp, photogenic blue. Temperatures drop steadily across the month — Seoul in early November feels autumnal and comfortable; Seoul in late November feels like a European winter is arriving.

City / Region Early November Late November
Seoul 8–15°C, crisp and clear, light jacket weather 2–9°C, cold mornings and nights, winter coat needed
Busan 11–18°C, warmer than Seoul, excellent conditions 6–13°C, pleasant days, chilly evenings near the sea
Gyeongju 8–15°C, ideal for outdoor site exploration 3–10°C, cold but dry — good walking conditions
Jeju 13–19°C, warmest region, pleasant and mild 9–15°C, still noticeably warmer than mainland
Gangwon / Mountains 2–10°C, first snowfall possible at altitude –3 to 5°C, ski resort preparation underway

Rainfall: November is one of Korea's driest months. Expect only 50–60mm of precipitation for the whole month in Seoul — mostly light, brief showers. You are unlikely to lose a day to rain.

Snow: Seoul's first snowfall typically arrives in late November or early December. It is a possibility by month's end, but not something to plan around. Gangwon Province mountains may see meaningful snow by mid-November.

Late autumn foliage in November

Here is the key distinction: October is when the mountains peak. November is when the cities peak. Naejangsan, Changdeokgung, Bulguksa — the famous foliage spots that appear in every Korea autumn photograph — hit their colour after the mountain national parks have already dropped their leaves. This is exactly why November visitors get better foliage at the iconic tourist destinations, often with fewer people around them.

Top foliage spots for November

Naejangsan National Park — Jeollanam-do, ~3 hours from Seoul by bus

Korea's most acclaimed maple forest. Naejangsan typically peaks in late October to early November — the timing is the most reliable of any major park. The main valley path through tunnel-like canopies of maples turning crimson and orange is genuinely extraordinary. It is popular: visit on a weekday if possible, and be at the trailhead by 8 AM to avoid the worst crowds. The park itself is compact and the scenery is concentrated — a half-day is enough for the main circuit.

Changdeokgung Secret Garden (Huwon) — Seoul

Seoul's most beautiful autumn foliage spot is the Huwon (Secret Garden) of Changdeokgung Palace. Entry requires a guided tour (book in advance — tours in English fill up). The garden is at its best in early to mid-November, when the ginko trees along the main paths go golden and the maples around the pavilions turn red. This is arguably the finest autumn scenery in Seoul — unhurried, guided, and architecturally extraordinary.

Bulguksa Temple, Gyeongju

The maples and ginkgos lining Bulguksa's approach path and outer courtyards peak in mid-November. Gyeongju in November is excellent generally — the city's outdoor sites (Tumuli Park, Anapji Pond, Seokguram Grotto) are all still accessible and beautiful in cool autumn light. Combine a Bulguksa visit with a Gyeongju overnight for one of the best November itineraries in Korea. See our Busan travel guide for nearby options.

Bukhansan National Park — Seoul

Seoul's mountain park peaks later than Seoraksan — typically late October to early November. The granite peak views from Baegundae, framed by red and gold foliage on the slopes below, are spectacular. A popular hike but not as overcrowded as autumn weekends in October.

Namsangol Hanok Village and Seoul Forest — Seoul

For a more casual foliage experience within Seoul, both Namsangol and Seoul Forest offer accessible, photogenic autumn colour through mid-November. Good options for evenings or half-days between other itinerary items.

Festivals & events in November

Jinju Namgang Yudeung Lantern Festival

Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province — early November (typically 1–10 Nov 2026)

This is the standout November event in Korea — one of the country's most visually stunning festivals and still relatively unknown to international tourists despite its scale. The festival commemorates the 1592 Battle of Jinju, during which lanterns were floated down the Nam River as a military signal. Today, thousands of ornate lanterns — giant sculpted forms of animals, historical figures, and cultural scenes — are displayed along the riverbank and floated on the water. At night, reflecting in the river, the effect is astonishing.

Jinju is accessible from Busan (1 hour by bus or train) and from Seoul (3 hours by KTX). It is well worth building into a trip that combines Gyeongju and Busan. Accommodation in Jinju itself is limited — book early or stay in Busan and day-trip. Find Jinju accommodation via Trip.com.

Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) — tail end

Busan — late October into early November

BIFF officially runs in October, but the festival atmosphere in Haeundae and the Nampo-dong Biff Square area lingers into early November. If your dates overlap with the final days of the festival, you can often access screenings and industry events without the chaos of peak BIFF week. The Centum City CGV, where many BIFF screenings take place, is worth visiting regardless for its sheer scale — one of the largest cinema complexes in the world.

Andong Mask Dance Festival — tail

Andong, North Gyeongsang Province — primarily early October, with some November programming

The main Andong Mask Dance Festival takes place in October, but Andong's cultural calendar continues into November. The Hahoe Folk Village — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Korea's best-preserved traditional villages — is at its autumn best in November and worth visiting independently of the festival calendar. The village is surrounded by the Nakdong River bend and the foliage on the surrounding hills in November is excellent.

Top things to do in Korea in November

  • Catch the Jinju Lantern Festival — the single best event-specific reason to visit Korea in November
  • Day trip to Naejangsan for the most concentrated maple forest scenery in the country
  • Book the Changdeokgung Secret Garden tour — reserve the English-language tour in advance, it fills up
  • Walk the foliage trails in Bukhansan before the leaves drop — early November is the last good window
  • Spend 2 nights in Gyeongju — Bulguksa, Seokguram, the royal tumuli, and Anapji Pond at night are all excellent in cool, clear autumn weather
  • Explore Busan's hillside neighbourhoods (Gamcheon Culture Village, Huinnyeoul Culture Village) — the autumn light and cool temperatures make the steep streets pleasant rather than exhausting
  • Try hotteok and street food — Korea's street food scene intensifies in cooler weather; hotteok (sweet pancakes), roasted chestnuts, and tteokbokki are at their best in autumn and winter
  • Visit Jeonju Hanok Village — the largest traditional hanok district in Korea, excellent in autumn with fewer visitors than spring

Where to go in Korea in November

Seoul

November is one of the best months for Seoul. The city's autumn colour peaks in early to mid-November — Changdeokgung, Gyeongbokgung, Deoksugung, and the neighbourhood streets of Bukchon are all beautiful. Weekend crowds are noticeably lighter than October. The cold is brisk but manageable, and the clear skies make for exceptional photography. Evenings are when the city's food and café culture come into their own — warm oneself in a pojangmacha tent, try late-night street food at Gwangjang Market, or sit by a window in one of Seongsu-dong's converted café spaces.

Gyeongju

The single best destination for November in Korea. The combination of autumn foliage (Bulguksa maples, ginkgos along the tumuli paths), cooler weather ideal for walking between outdoor sites, and significantly fewer visitors than spring or October makes Gyeongju in November a near-perfect travel experience. Two nights is the right amount of time. Find Gyeongju accommodation and local recommendations in our Gyeongju accommodation guide.

Busan

Busan in November is excellent. The city runs warmer than Seoul — 2–3°C difference — and the hillside neighbourhoods (Gamcheon, Choryang) and coastal walks (Oryukdo Skywalk, Igidae Park) are at their most pleasant. The tail of BIFF adds an arts-and-cinema dimension in early November. Haeundae Beach in November is quiet and atmospheric — good for a morning walk with coffee, not for swimming. See our full Busan travel guide for detailed neighbourhood and accommodation advice.

Jeju Island

Jeju in November is mild by mainland standards — averaging 13–19°C in early November. Hallasan's higher trails may be partially closed due to autumn weather protocols, but the coastal trails (Olle routes) are excellent in cool, clear conditions. Fewer tourists than any other time of year except deep winter.

Jinju (Lantern Festival)

Worth building in specifically for the festival in early November. Combine with Gyeongju and Busan for a strong southeast Korea itinerary. Jinju is small — one night is typically enough unless you want multiple evenings of the lantern displays.

What to pack for Korea in November

November packing needs to cover a range — from mild afternoons in early November to near-freezing nights by month's end. The principle is layering.

Item Notes
Mid-weight coat For early November; a down jacket or wool coat for late November. Puffer jackets are ubiquitous in Korea — buying one locally is easy and reasonably priced
Thermal base layers Essential for late November, especially in Seoul and Gangwon; daytime is manageable but evenings drop sharply
Scarf, gloves, hat Pack all three even for early November — cold snaps can arrive quickly. Korean accessories are excellent quality and inexpensive in local markets
Comfortable walking shoes Waterproof or water-resistant recommended; temple and palace grounds often involve gravel or stone paths that are slippery when wet
Sunscreen UV index remains significant despite cool temperatures — especially important for hiking
Light rain layer November is dry but showers are possible — a packable rain jacket doubles as an extra wind layer

November travel tips

  • Book accommodation early for the Jinju Lantern Festival window. Jinju itself has limited hotel options — Busan is the better base with regular buses to Jinju. Accommodation near Naejangsan also books out on festival weekends.
  • Weekday travel pays dividends in November. October's weekend crowds thin by November, but popular sites like Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon are still busy on Saturday and Sunday. Aim for Tuesday through Thursday for the most relaxed experience.
  • Shoulder-season flight and hotel pricing is real. October is a peak domestic and international travel period in Korea — prices for everything from flights to hotel rooms drop noticeably in November. If you're flexible, November saves money without sacrificing experience.
  • Check Changdeokgung Secret Garden tour availability in advance. The English-language guided tours have limited capacity and sell out. Book via the Changdeokgung official website or Klook.
  • Carry a portable charger. Shorter daylight hours mean more evening time — your phone will be working harder for maps, translation, and photography.
  • Naejangsan weekends are crowded. The park sees its highest single-day visitor numbers on autumn weekends. Go on a weekday, arrive before 8 AM, or consider staying in Jeonju the night before for an early start.

FAQ

Is November too cold to visit Korea?
Not at all. Early November (5–15°C in Seoul) is comfortable for most travellers with appropriate layers. Late November (2–9°C) requires a proper coat and warm accessories but is perfectly manageable. Gyeongju and Busan run several degrees warmer than Seoul throughout the month.

When does Korea autumn foliage peak in November?
City parks and palace gardens in Seoul peak in early to mid-November. Naejangsan National Park (the most famous maple forest) peaks late October to early November. Gyeongju's temple grounds (Bulguksa) peak mid-November. Foliage is effectively over at high mountain elevations by November.

Is November cheaper than October in Korea?
Yes, noticeably so. October is a peak travel month in Korea — autumn colour, comfortable weather, and popular with domestic tourists. November sees significantly lower hotel rates and flight prices with only marginally different weather conditions. The foliage is different (lower elevation) but just as beautiful.

What is the Jinju Lantern Festival?
The Jinju Namgang Yudeung Lantern Festival is held along the Nam River in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, typically in early November. It commemorates the 1592 Battle of Jinju and features thousands of elaborately crafted lanterns displayed along the riverbank and floated on the water at night. It is one of Korea's most visually spectacular events and is free to attend.

Is it worth visiting Korea in November vs October?
Both are excellent. October has Seoraksan foliage at its peak, Chuseok cultural programming (if dates align), and maximum energy. November has lower prices, fewer crowds, city and temple foliage at its peak, the Jinju Lantern Festival, and clearer skies. If you are specifically targeting the famous lower-elevation foliage spots — Naejangsan, Changdeokgung, Bulguksa — November may actually be the better choice.
