The Gunhangje Festival started as a ceremony honoring Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Korea's legendary naval hero. Over the decades, cherry blossoms — which always bloom at the same time — became the main attraction. Today it is the single biggest cherry blossom festival in Korea.
During the festival, the Korean Navy opens normally restricted military areas to the public, including the Naval Academy and the NFRDI Eco Park, which are only accessible during this 10-day window.
Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Jinhae
1. Gyeonghwa Station — The Cherry Blossom Train Tunnel
This is THE shot. An abandoned railway line where the tracks disappear under a canopy of cherry blossoms. During the festival, trains are stationed at the platform and you can walk freely on the tracks.
- Best time: Before 8 AM to avoid crowds, or at night for illuminated blossoms
- Tip: Walk further down the tracks past the main station area — the tunnel continues and the crowds thin out dramatically
- Watch out: The tracks are uneven. Wear comfortable shoes, not heels
2. Yeojwacheon Stream & Romance Bridge
A 1.5 km stream lined with cherry trees on both sides, forming a natural tunnel. The Romance Bridge became famous as the filming location for the K-drama "Romance" — a couple standing on the bridge with cherry blossoms overhead has become one of the most iconic images of spring in Korea.
- All 15 bridges over the stream have different names — Romance Bridge is across from the Jinhae Post Office
- Photo tip: Walk down the stone stairs below the bridge. From the water level, you get cherry blossoms framing the bridge above — the perfect shot
- Night visit: The trees are illuminated at night and the blossoms reflect in the stream. Bring a tripod for night photography
- Warning: Don't bump your head on the low-hanging cherry blossom branches! They grow thick and low over the stream path
3. Jehwangsan Park — Monorail Through the Blossoms
Take the monorail up Jehwangsan Mountain for aerial views of cherry blossoms covering the entire city below. At the top, you get a panoramic view of Jinhae port with the pink canopy stretching in every direction.
- Monorail tip: The line can be long during peak hours. Go early morning or take the walking path up instead — it is lined with cherry trees the whole way
- At the summit: Jinhae Tower observatory gives 360-degree views of the cherry-covered city
4. Jinhae Naval Academy
Only open to the public during the Gunhangje Festival. The long cherry tree avenue leading to the academy building is one of the most spectacular sights in Jinhae. The trees here are among the oldest and tallest in the city.
5. Cherry Blossom Scenic Drive
If you don't like crowds, rent a car and drive the scenic routes around Jinhae. The roads between Jinhae and Masan are lined with cherry trees, and you'll have them largely to yourself while everyone else crowds the famous spots downtown.
- Best route: Anmingogae Pass — a 9 km mountain road with cherry blossoms and views of both Jinhae and Masan
- Year-round beauty: The drive is gorgeous in every season, but during cherry blossom season it is truly unforgettable
6. Jungwon Rotary — The Heart of the Festival
Three rotaries — Chungwon, Bukwon, and Namwon — form the center of Jinhae. Built during the Japanese colonial period, these circular intersections are surrounded by 100-year-old cherry trees. During the festival, the roads become pedestrian-only.
The rotaries give Jinhae a unique early-20th-century European town feel — circular plazas with cherry blossoms radiating in every direction.
Insider Tips
- Go on a weekday. Weekend crowds are intense — 200,000+ visitors per day. Weekdays are still busy but manageable
- Arrive early. The best spots (Gyeonghwa Station, Romance Bridge) are empty before 7:30 AM. By 10 AM, you're shoulder to shoulder
- Cherry blossoms everywhere. Don't stress about reaching every famous spot. Jinhae has 360,000 trees — literally every street is beautiful. Walk randomly and you'll find your own secret spots
- Night viewing is underrated. Most day-trippers leave by 6 PM. The illuminated cherry blossoms at night along Yeojwacheon Stream are arguably more beautiful than daytime
- Wear layers. Late March in southern Korea is pleasant (12-18°C) but evenings are cool (5-8°C). Bring a light jacket
- Bring a portable charger. You will take hundreds of photos. Your phone battery will not survive
- Download Naver Map before you go — Google Maps is less reliable in Korean cities. Naver gives accurate bus routes, walking times, and real-time congestion
Markets & Local Food
Jinhae Central Market
The largest daily market in Jinhae, open since 1949. Come here for local street food: hotteok (sweet pancakes), eomuk (fish cake — Jinhae is a naval port, the seafood is excellent), and dakgangjeong (crispy fried chicken).
Gyeonghwa Market (Fifth-Day Market)
Held every five days near Gyeonghwa Station. If your visit coincides, this is where locals shop. Fresh produce, dried seafood, and incredible pajeon (green onion pancakes) from the market stalls.
Budget tip: Market food averages 3,000-5,000 KRW ($2-4 USD) per item. You can eat very well for under $10.

FAQ
Is the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival free?
Yes, the festival itself is completely free. You just show up. Some special venues (like the Naval Academy) require queuing but have no entry fee.
When is the best time to visit?
The first 3-4 days of the festival (late March) typically have the freshest blooms and slightly fewer crowds than the final weekend. If you can only come on a weekend, arrive before 8 AM.
Can I do Jinhae as a day trip from Busan?
Yes, absolutely. Busan to Jinhae is only 1 hour by bus. Most visitors do it as a day trip. Leave early, come back late to catch the night cherry blossoms.
Is it worth visiting if I'm already seeing cherry blossoms in Seoul?
Seoul has beautiful cherry blossoms, but Jinhae is a completely different experience. The sheer concentration of 360,000 trees in a small city means the entire town is a cherry blossom tunnel. Seoul has cherry blossom spots; Jinhae IS the cherry blossom spot.
Where should I stay?
Most visitors do a day trip from Busan. If you want to stay overnight (recommended for night cherry blossoms), there are hotels and guesthouses in Jinhae, but book early — they sell out weeks in advance during the festival.
