Jeju Waterfalls Guide 2026: Complete Visitor's Guide (4 Best Falls)
Jeju has more waterfalls per square kilometer than any other Korean province — a side effect of the island being a porous volcanic shield with enormous rainfall. Four are worth your time: Cheonjiyeon, Cheonjeyeon, Jeongbang, and Soesokkak. Three of them are within a 20-minute drive of each other on the south coast, which means you can do a perfect "waterfall day" loop without backtracking. This guide explains what makes each one different, and how to plan the trip.

1. Cheonjiyeon Falls — The Twilight Lit One
22m drop, in central Seogwipo, lit at night. The waterfall plunges into a deep emerald pool surrounded by rare native subtropical plants (chestnut oak, camphor, lacebark elm — some species exist only on Jeju). The walking path follows the stream for about 800m, well-paved and gentle. After dark the falls are illuminated until 9pm, which is the most photogenic time.
- Address: 666-1 Cheonjiyeon-ro, Seogwipo-si
- Entry: ₩2,000 adults, ₩1,000 kids
- Hours: 9am – 9pm (last entry 8:30pm)
- Walk: 30 min round trip, easy
- Best time: Dusk for the lighting
2. Cheonjeyeon Falls — The Three-Tier Forest One
Three separate falls, connected by forest paths and a fairytale-style arched bridge. The first tier rarely flows (only after heavy rain — it forms a deep blue pool surrounded by sheer cliffs). Tiers 2 and 3 flow year-round. The Seonimgyo Bridge between them is decorated with seven nymph statues — Korean folklore says nymphs descend here at night.
- Address: 132 Cheonjeyeon-ro, Jungmun, Seogwipo-si
- Entry: ₩4,000 adults, ₩2,000 kids
- Hours: 8am – 6pm
- Walk: 1 hour round trip — there are stairs
- Best time: After heavy rain (tier 1 flows) or sunny mid-morning
3. Jeongbang Falls — The Falls That Drop Into the Sea
One of only three waterfalls in Asia that empty directly into the ocean. A 23m drop straight onto a rocky beach with the Pacific behind it — visually unique. The view is from below — you walk down stone steps and stand on the foreshore, with the falls thundering down to your right and the sea on your left.
- Address: 37 Chilsimni-ro 214beon-gil, Seogwipo-si
- Entry: ₩2,000 adults, ₩1,000 kids
- Hours: 9am – 5pm
- Walk: 15 min round trip — steep stone stairs down and back up
- Best time: Late afternoon (sun on the water)
4. Soesokkak — The Estuary One (Kayak)
Technically not a waterfall — it's an emerald-green estuary where freshwater from Hallasan meets the Pacific, lined with vertical basalt cliffs. The water is unnaturally clear and turquoise. You can rent traditional tewoo rafts (₩10,000), kayaks (₩20,000), or transparent kayaks for the most photogenic option. About 30 min from Cheonjiyeon — pairs naturally with a south-coast waterfall day.
- Address: 105 Hahyo-dong, Seogwipo-si
- Entry: Free to walk; rentals priced separately
- Hours: 9am – 6pm (rentals)
- Best time: Mid-morning or late afternoon for color
How to Combine Them in One Day
All four are within a 30-minute drive of each other on Jeju's south coast. A reasonable single-day itinerary:
- 9:00am — Cheonjeyeon Falls (most steps, do it while fresh)
- 11:00am — Jeongbang Falls (10 min drive)
- 12:30pm — Lunch in Seogwipo
- 2:00pm — Soesokkak (kayak rental)
- 5:30pm — Cheonjiyeon Falls (stay for the lighting)
This is doable with rental car. By bus the same loop takes a full day with limited time at each stop.
Where to Stay (Seogwipo Base)
All four waterfalls are clustered around Seogwipo, Jeju's second city. Stay there for proximity:
- Seogwipo downtown: Walking distance to Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang. Mid-range hotels and pensions ₩70,000–150,000/night.
- Jungmun resort cluster: 15 min west — luxury hotels (Lotte, Shilla, Hyatt) near Cheonjeyeon Falls.
- Day trip from Jeju City: 1 hour drive each way. Doable but tight.

Practical Tips
- After rain is best. Volume of falls 2x normal after a typhoon or heavy rain.
- Dry season warning. In a dry summer, Cheonjeyeon's first tier won't flow at all.
- Photography: Cheonjiyeon at dusk (lit), Jeongbang in afternoon, Cheonjeyeon mid-morning.
- Wear good shoes. Stairs at Jeongbang are slick when wet.
- Cash + T-money. Entry fees take card; kayak rentals at Soesokkak are sometimes cash-only.
