Tongyeong Seafood & Chungmu Gimbap — What Locals & Foreigners Really Say (2026)
통영 (Tongyeong) sits on Korea's southern coast and is widely called the "Naples of Korea" — a port city of islands, seafood, and stunning harbor views. Famous for the world's longest cable car, Dongpirang mural village, and above all, seafood that Koreans themselves make pilgrimages for: fresh oysters, Chungmu gimbap (충무김밥), and raw sea cucumber. This is one of the most underrated cities in Korea for food travelers.

What Locals Say 🇰🇷
"충무김밥은 작고 아무것도 안 들어간 김밥인데, 깍두기랑 꼴뚜기무침이랑 같이 먹어야 진짜야. 세트로 주문해야 함"
(Chungmu gimbap is small and plain, but you have to eat it with the radish kimchi and seasoned baby octopus. Always order the set)

"통영 굴은 국내 생굴 생산량의 70%. 11월~3월이 제철이고, 그때 시장 가면 1kg에 8,000원짜리 생굴 먹을 수 있어"
(Tongyeong produces 70% of Korea's fresh oysters. November to March is peak season — go to the market then and you can get 1kg of fresh oysters for ₩8,000)
— Korean food magazine, 2025
"케이블카는 일출 직후에 타야 운무랑 다도해 섬들이 보여. 낮에는 그냥 평범한 풍경이고 대기줄만 길어"
(Ride the cable car right after sunrise to see the morning mist over the island archipelago. Daytime is just ordinary scenery with long queues)
— Travel blog, 2025
"동피랑 벽화마을은 주민들이 직접 참여해서 만든 거야. 재개발 막으려고 그림 그리기 시작했는데 이제 통영 명소가 됨"
(Dongpirang mural village was made by residents themselves. They started painting murals to stop redevelopment — now it's become Tongyeong's landmark)

What Foreigners Say 🌍
"Chungmu gimbap looks like nothing — tiny plain rice rolls. But the spicy squid and radish kimchi that comes with it transformed the whole thing. One of the best food surprises in Korea."
— Travel blog, 2025
"The fish market near the harbor — I watched ajummas shucking oysters faster than any machine could. Bought a tray of fresh oysters with gochujang sauce for ₩10,000. Ate standing up at the market. Perfect."
— Reddit r/korea, 2025
"Tongyeong is what Busan used to be before it got big — a working port city with incredible seafood and zero tourist infrastructure for foreigners. Absolutely loved it."
— TripAdvisor review, 2025
"The cable car views are genuinely jaw-dropping. 1,975m long, panoramic views of the island-dotted southern sea. Go on a clear day — the difference is dramatic."

Cultural context: Chungmu gimbap was born in Tongyeong (then called Chungmu) in the 1950s. A ferry vendor named Kim Mok-deok started selling small, plain gimbap rolls to hungry passengers — the spicy squid and radish kimchi was the flavor. The dish spread nationwide through imitation, but the original Tongyeong versions from the harbor area still use the classic recipe. Order the full set (충무김밥 세트) — the gimbap alone is incomplete.
(Tongyeong Central Market)
The hub of Tongyeong food. Stalls selling fresh oysters, sea urchin, sea cucumber, raw fish, and grilled seafood. During oyster season (Nov–Mar), prices are remarkable. Arrive in the morning for the best selection. Bring cash.

(Chungmu Gimbap Street)
Multiple restaurants along the harbor serving the original Chungmu gimbap sets. The combination of plain rice rolls + spicy squid + radish kimchi is the defining taste of Tongyeong. Look for grandmother-run places with handwritten menus for the most authentic versions.

(Hallyeohaesudo Cable Car)
Korea's longest cable car at 1,975m. Summit views over the Hallyeo Sea and the island archipelago. Go early morning or at sunset — midday visibility is often hazy and queues are long. Pre-book online to skip ticket lines.

Before You Go — Key Tips
- Oyster season is November to March. Outside of this window, oysters are still available but at higher prices and lower freshness. Summer is still great for other seafood.
- Chungmu gimbap must be ordered as a set. Just the gimbap rolls alone are bland — the spicy squid and radish kimchi are the flavor. Always order the full set (세트).
- Dongpirang murals are best explored slowly. The hillside mural village is small — give yourself an hour to walk through. The views from the top over the harbor are excellent.
- Getting there: No direct KTX. Bus from Busan (1hr) or express bus from Seoul (4.5hrs) are the best options. From Busan, rent a car or take local buses to explore more coast.
- Combine with nearby coast. Tongyeong → Geoje Island → Namhae Island is a spectacular coastal road trip. All within 1-2 hours of each other.
🚌 How to get there: Bus from Busan Seobu Terminal → Tongyeong (1hr). Or express bus from Seoul Nambu Terminal → Tongyeong (4.5hrs).
