Andong Hahoe Village & Jjimdak District — What Locals & Foreigners Really Say (2026)
안동 (Andong) is Korea's Confucian capital — home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites (Hahoe Folk Village and Dosan Seowon), the original jjimdak braised chicken, and 600-year-old clan villages still inhabited by the same families. It's two hours east of Seoul by KTX and remains largely off the international tourist radar, which is exactly why it's so good.

What Locals Say 🇰🇷
"안동 찜닭 원조는 구시장 골목에 있어. 신시장 쪽은 관광객용이고, 진짜는 좁은 골목 안에 있는 오래된 집들"
(The original Andong jjimdak is in the old market alley. The new market area is for tourists — the real ones are the old restaurants deep in the narrow alleys)
— Andong local review, 2025
"하회마을은 아침 일찍 가야 진짜 분위기. 오후에는 단체 관광객으로 너무 붐비고, 마을 사람들이 실제로 살고 있다는 느낌이 없어져"
(Go to Hahoe Village early morning for the real atmosphere. By afternoon it gets crowded with tour groups and you lose the sense that people actually live there)
— Korean travel blog, 2025
"안동소주는 45도짜리 진짜 증류식 소주야. 참이슬 같은 희석식 아니고. 안동에서 마시면 완전히 다른 경험"
(Andong soju is real 45-degree distilled soju — not diluted like Chamisul. Drinking it in Andong is a completely different experience)
— Korean food writer, 2025
"도산서원은 이른 아침에 혼자 가면 완전 다른 느낌. 한국 선비들이 왜 이곳에서 공부했는지 이해가 됨"
(Go to Dosan Seowon alone in the early morning and it feels completely different. You understand why Korean scholars studied here)

What Foreigners Say 🌍
"Hahoe Village is what I imagined traditional Korea would look like before I arrived. Thatched roofs, mudwalls, aristocratic houses — and actual families still living there. Nothing staged."
— TripAdvisor review, 2025
"The jjimdak in the old market alley — massive portions of braised chicken with glass noodles, soy sauce, vegetables. Enough for 3 people at ₩28,000. Nothing like the jjimdak chains back home."
— Travel blog, 2025
"Andong felt like discovering a secret. Two hours from Seoul and we were the only foreigners in the whole town. People were genuinely surprised and delighted to see us."
— Reddit r/koreatravel, 2025
"The mask dance performance at Hahoe is genuinely eerie and beautiful. It's been performed for 600+ years. I did not expect to be moved by it but I was."
— Travel forum, 2026

Cultural context: Andong jjimdak originated in the 1970s when small restaurants in the old market competed by stuffing their braised chicken with whatever ingredients they had. The version that emerged — soy-braised chicken with glass noodles, potatoes, vegetables, and dried chilies — became a national dish. But the original old market restaurants still make it the way it was invented. The jjimdak chains you see everywhere in Korea are inspired by Andong but taste nothing like the real thing.
(Andong Jjimdak Old Market Alley)
The original cluster of jjimdak restaurants in Andong's old market. Multiple shops, all competing for the original recipe title. Walk the alley and pick the one with the longest queue of locals. Portions are huge — one serving feeds 2-3 people.

(Hahoe Folk Village)
UNESCO World Heritage Site. A 600-year-old clan village where the Ryu family still lives. Thatched-roof houses, aristocratic yangban mansions, and a bend in the Nakdong River that creates a natural fortress. Arrive before 9am to have it mostly to yourself.

(Andong Soju Experience)
Real distilled Andong soju — 45% ABV, smooth, complex. Not the watered-down bottles sold in Seoul convenience stores. The Andong Soju Traditional Food Museum offers tastings and tours. Buy a bottle to take home — it's a legitimate cultural souvenir.

Before You Go — Key Tips
- Go early to Hahoe Village. Buses from Andong city start at 7am. You'll have the village nearly to yourself before tour groups arrive at 10am.
- Jjimdak feeds more than you think. Order the small (소) to start — it's genuinely enough for 2-3 people. Many first-timers over-order.
- The mask dance happens on weekends. Check the Hahoe Village schedule — traditional mask dance (탈춤) performances run on select days, especially weekends and holidays.
- Dosan Seowon is 30 minutes from the city. The Confucian academy where Yi Hwang (Yi Toegye) taught is absolutely worth the trip — one of Korea's most serene and historically significant sites.
- 2 hours from Seoul by KTX. KTX from Cheongnyangni or Seoul Station to Andong, then bus or taxi to Hahoe (30 min).
- Stay overnight. Andong deserves at least one night. The city feels different after the day-trippers leave. Hanok homestays available near the traditional culture village.
🚆 How to get there: KTX from Seoul Cheongnyangni → Andong (1hr 50min). Then bus or taxi to Hahoe Village (30 min, ₩1,500 bus / ₩12,000 taxi).
