Where to Stay in Itaewon — International District (2026)
Itaewon is Seoul's most internationally oriented neighborhood — a dense strip of global restaurants, rooftop bars, vintage shops, and cultural venues that developed around the US military base at Yongsan. It sits on the south face of Namsan, which means N Seoul Tower is reachable on foot via the mountain trail (about 40 minutes) and Myeongdong is 10 minutes on subway Line 6. The neighborhood has a distinct energy from the rest of Seoul — louder, more diverse, more openly welcoming to international visitors.
Why stay in Itaewon
The main draws are the food scene and nightlife. Itaewon has the broadest concentration of non-Korean restaurants in Seoul — Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, and European options that are either unavailable or hard to find elsewhere. The rooftop bar scene here (particularly around the Noksapyeong end) is the best in the city for views toward Namsan. The Hamilton Hotel corridor remains the nightlife center, though the neighborhood has diversified significantly since 2022. For Namsan access specifically, Itaewon is the closest hotel district — the cable car station and hiking paths up to N Seoul Tower originate from Myeongdong but the southern trails depart from near Itaewon station.
Who Itaewon suits — and who it doesn't
Good fit: Travelers prioritizing nightlife and international dining, visitors who want easy Namsan and N Seoul Tower access, and those who prefer a less homogenous district atmosphere. Poor fit: Palace-and-culture focused itineraries (Gyeongbokgung requires a transfer and is 35 minutes away), budget travelers (Itaewon hotels tend to price at a premium relative to amenities compared to Hongdae), and families seeking a quiet base. Itaewon is best as one stop on a multi-base Seoul visit rather than the only base for a culture-heavy trip.
