Seoul Christmas & New Year's Eve 2026: Markets, Lights, Events & Where to Stay

seoul-guide··By Team Korea Insider

Seoul at Christmas is pure magic. While Korea isn't a Christian country (about 30% are), Koreans have embraced the aesthetic of the season — Myeongdong transforms into a tunnel of lights, the Cheonggyecheon stream fills with thousands of lanterns, department stores compete for the most elaborate window displays, and couples pack cafes for "Christmas dates." Then on New Year's Eve, the Bosingak Bell ceremony rings 33 times at midnight as thousands count down in Jongno. It's festive, romantic, and unlike Christmas anywhere else.

Christmas Markets

Korean Christmas markets have grown significantly in recent years — they're smaller than European markets but uniquely Korean.

Top Markets

  • Myeongdong Christmas Market — street stalls, hot chocolate, accessories, K-beauty Christmas sets
  • Hongdae Christmas Market — indie/artisan crafts, handmade gifts, live busking performances
  • Lotte World Mall Holiday Market — premium, indoor, warm. Food, gifts, decorations.
  • Itaewon / Yongsan — more international feel, imported goods, mulled wine

Best Things to Do: Christmas in Seoul

  1. Walk Cheonggyecheon Lantern Festival — the stream lit by thousands of lanterns is Seoul's most magical winter scene. Free.
  2. Ice skate at Seoul Plaza — outdoor rink in front of City Hall. ~1,000 KRW entry (yes, that cheap).
  3. Myeongdong night walk — shop, eat street food, see the lights. Peak Christmas atmosphere.
  4. Jjimjilbang night — spend a night at Dragon Hill Spa or Siloam. The Korean way to stay warm.
  5. Christmas Eve cafe crawl — Korean couples pack themed cafes on Dec 24. Join the vibe in Hongdae or Garosu-gil.
  6. Lotte World Tower observation deck — 123rd floor night view of Seoul lit up for the holidays.
  7. Palaces in snow — if it snows over Christmas, Gyeongbokgung is unforgettable.

New Year's Eve in Seoul

Bosingak Bell Ceremony (보신각 타종행사)

The main event. At midnight on December 31, the Bosingak Bell in Jongno is struck 33 times to welcome the new year. Tens of thousands gather in the streets around Jonggak Station. There's a countdown on big screens, performances before midnight, and an eruption of cheering when the bell rings.

  • Where: Bosingak Pavilion, Jonggak Station (Line 1)
  • When: Festivities from ~22:00, bell at midnight
  • Cost: Free
  • Tip: Arrive by 21:00 for a decent spot. Dress VERY warm — you'll stand outside for 3+ hours in -5°C to -10°C.

Other NYE Options

  • N Seoul Tower countdown — fireworks and countdown at Namsan. Romantic.
  • Lotte World Tower — observation deck parties and fireworks
  • Hongdae clubs — NYE club events run all night. Most clubs have special entry fees.
  • Gangnam bars — upscale NYE dinners and parties
  • Jeongdongjin sunrise — catch a late-night train to Gangneung, watch the first sunrise of 2027 at Korea's famous east coast spot

What's Open on Christmas Day?

December 25 is a public holiday in Korea (one of the few non-Korean holidays officially observed). But unlike Western countries, almost everything stays open:

  • Open: Shopping malls, department stores, restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, tourist attractions, subway/buses
  • Closed: Banks, government offices, some small businesses
  • Note: Christmas in Korea is more like Valentine's Day — a couples' holiday. Restaurants may have special (pricier) menus. Cafes will be packed with couples.

Festive Food & Cafes

  • Christmas cakes — Korean bakeries (Paris Baguette, Tous Les Jours) sell elaborate Christmas cakes. Every Korean buys one. They're actually very good.
  • Fried chicken — Koreans eat fried chicken on Christmas Eve. Not a joke. KFC runs its biggest promotions of the year. BHC, BBQ, and Kyochon are better options.
  • Themed cafes — Hongdae, Garosu-gil, and Seongsu cafes go all-out with Christmas decor, menus, and photo spots.
  • Hotel buffets — major hotels offer Christmas dinner buffets (100,000–200,000 KRW). Book ahead.
  • Street food — hotteok, bungeoppang, and hot odeng from every corner vendor. The real Korean Christmas meal.

Practical Tips

  • Dress warm. Late December Seoul: -5 to -10°C. See our Winter Guide for packing advice.
  • Book restaurants for Christmas Eve. Popular restaurants fill up — it's date night for the entire country.
  • Subway runs late on NYE. Seoul Metro extends hours on December 31 — usually until 2:00 AM.
  • Bring hand warmers. Essential for the Bosingak countdown. 500 KRW at any convenience store.
  • Christmas ≠ family day in Korea. It's a couples/friends holiday. Don't expect the family-gathering vibe of Western Christmas.

FAQ

Do Koreans celebrate Christmas?

Sort of. December 25 is a public holiday and Koreans enjoy the festive atmosphere, but it's primarily a date holiday for couples. Family gatherings happen at Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok, not Christmas.

Is Seoul crowded at Christmas?

Myeongdong and popular date spots are packed on Dec 24–25. Tourist attractions are moderately busy. It's not as crowded as cherry blossom season or summer.

Is it worth visiting Seoul just for Christmas?

If you enjoy winter atmospheres, lights, and cozy cafe culture — yes. Combine it with a ski trip or ice fishing festival for the full Korean winter experience.
