Korea Winter 2026-27: Skiing, Ice Festivals, Snow & Complete Planning Guide

korea-travel··By Team Korea Insider

Korea in winter is a different country. The same mountains that glow with autumn foliage in October are buried under pristine snow by December. Ski resorts that hosted the 2018 Olympics, ice fishing festivals where you drill through frozen lakes, steaming hot spring baths surrounded by snow, and Seoul's streets lit up with Christmas markets and year-end lights — Korean winter is dramatic, beautiful, and far more affordable than you'd expect.

Winter is also Korea's low season for international tourism, which means cheaper flights, emptier attractions, and better hotel deals. This guide covers everything from December 2026 through February 2027.

Winter Weather: What to Expect

Korea is COLD in winter. Seoul regularly drops below -10°C in January. The Gangwon mountain areas where ski resorts are located can hit -20°C. But Korea is extremely well-prepared — ondol (underfloor heating) is in every building, public transport is heated, and there's a cozy indoor culture of hot food and jjimjilbang (saunas).

Seoul in winter is cold but beautiful — and most attractions are indoors or heated:

  • Palaces in snow — Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung in fresh snow are among Korea's most beautiful scenes
  • Myeongdong Christmas lights — the shopping district lights up from late November
  • Underground shopping — COEX, Gangnam Underground, Yeongdeungpo — entire cities below ground, fully heated
  • Jjimjilbang (saunas) — Dragon Hill Spa, Siloam, Spa Lei — the Korean winter survival essential
  • N Seoul Tower — winter night views of Seoul are the clearest (cold air = no haze)

FAQ

Is winter a good time to visit Korea?

Yes — if you prepare for the cold. Winter Korea has skiing, festivals, hot springs, cheaper prices, and fewer tourists. The cold is real (-10°C in Seoul) but manageable with proper clothing.

Does it snow in Seoul?

Yes, usually several times between December and February. Heavy snow is less common but happens. When it does, Seoul looks magical.

Can I ski as a beginner?

Absolutely. All Korean ski resorts have beginner slopes and offer lessons (many in English). Day trip packages from Seoul include everything — equipment, lift pass, and often a lesson.

Is Jeju worth visiting in winter?

Jeju is Korea's warmest region in winter (3–8°C vs Seoul's -6°C). No snow at sea level, but Hallasan gets snow. It's quieter, cheaper, and still beautiful. Good for people who want milder winter weather.
