Damyang Bamboo Festival 2026: Dates, Juknokwon & Complete Guide

festivals··By Team Korea Insider

Walk through 8 kilometers of bamboo forest so dense the sunlight filters through in green shafts. The Damyang Bamboo Festival (담양대나무축제) celebrates Korea's bamboo capital with forest walks, bamboo craft workshops, traditional food, and cultural performances — all inside one of Asia's most beautiful bamboo gardens.

Damyang (담양) in Jeollanam-do has been Korea's bamboo center for over 1,000 years. The town's Juknokwon (죽녹원) bamboo garden is a 310,000 square meter forest of towering bamboo, connected by winding paths and stone bridges. During the festival, the garden and surrounding area host bamboo-themed activities, local food markets, and traditional performances. In 2026, it's been selected as a representative festival of Jeollanam-do.

Juknokwon Bamboo Garden (죽녹원)

The heart of the festival. Juknokwon has 8 themed walking paths winding through dense bamboo groves:

  1. Unaegi Path (운수대통길) — "Good Fortune Path" (1.4km, 30 min). The most popular, lined with the tallest bamboo.
  2. Philosopher's Path (사색의 길) — Quiet, contemplative walk. Fewer people, more birds.
  3. Lovers' Path (사랑의 길) — Narrow bamboo-lined corridor, popular with couples.
  4. Ecology Path (생태길) — Nature interpretation boards, good for kids.
  5. Cheongryangsan Path — Uphill, connects to mountain viewpoint. Best panoramic views.

The entire garden takes 1.5-2 hours at a leisurely pace. The bamboo canopy creates natural air conditioning — it's noticeably cooler inside even on hot days.

  • Bamboo ice cream — Green-tinted soft serve with bamboo leaf extract.

Yes. The bamboo forest is beautiful year-round. Summer is lush and cool; autumn has golden bamboo leaves; winter brings snow on bamboo. The festival adds activities and atmosphere, but the garden alone is the main attraction.

How long do I need in Damyang?

Half day for Juknokwon + lunch. Full day to add Metasequoia Road, Soswaewon, and tteokgalbi street. Overnight if combining with Boseong.

Is it kid-friendly?

Very. Paths are paved and stroller-accessible (main routes only). Kids love the bamboo craft workshops and traditional games. The forest walk is flat and shaded.
