Boryeong Mud Festival 2026: Complete Guide (Dates, Tours, Hotels)
Boryeong Mud Festival is the most foreigner-friendly festival in Korea — a 10-day mud-soaked party on Daecheon Beach where roughly a third of the visitors are international tourists, the K-pop concerts run until midnight, and you spend two full days wearing only mud and a swimsuit. It launched in 1998 specifically to introduce overseas visitors to Boryeong's mineral-rich mud, and it's worked: about 3 million people now show up each summer.
This guide covers what international tourists actually need to plan a Boryeong trip: 2026 dates, what's actually at the festival (mud pool, slides, body painting, concerts), how to get there from Seoul, and where to stay during the chaos.

2026 Dates & What to Expect in 2027
The festival is held annually at Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, Chungcheongnam-do:
- 2026 (upcoming): July 17 – July 26, 2026 (10-day window — confirm with the official festival site closer to the date).
- 2027 (estimated): Mid-to-late July — typically a 10-day window straddling the third and fourth weekends of July.
The middle weekend (typically the third Saturday and Sunday of July) is by far the most crowded — also when the biggest K-pop and EDM acts are scheduled. If you want photos with empty mud pits, weekday mornings are the move.
What's Actually at the Festival
The festival ground covers Daecheon Beach and a section of inland streets. Most international visitors only have one day — these are the activities that justify the trip:
1. The Mud Experience Land
The main event. Imagine a temporary water park made of mud — slides, mud pools, mud prisons, mud massage tents, mud body painting stations. You buy a single wristband (₩10,000–15,000) that gets you unlimited entry for the day. Most people spend 3–5 hours here.
The mud is real, mineral-rich Boryeong mud (high in germanium and bentonite — actually used in Korean skincare). It's good for your skin, dries fast, and washes off cleanly with seawater.
2. Mud Wrestling & Mud Soccer
Open competitions throughout the day — anyone can sign up at the registration tent. Mud soccer is more accessible (4-a-side, fast rotations), mud wrestling is more spectator-friendly. Free to enter, prizes for winners.
3. Beach Concerts & Night Parade
Daecheon Beach hosts free concerts every evening of the festival — mostly Korean indie, K-pop, and EDM acts on the main stage from 6pm to midnight. Bring a beach mat and a cold drink. The closing weekend has fireworks.
4. The Mud Parade
Held on opening day and the middle Saturday — a procession of mud-covered participants down the beachfront streets, Korean traditional drummers, costumed performers, and mud-cannon trucks. Worth catching if you're there at the right time.
How to Get to Boryeong from Seoul
Daecheon is about 200km south of Seoul on the west coast. Three good options:
| Option | Time | Cost (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal | 2 hr direct | ₩15,000 each way | Most common option. Multiple departures daily. |
| ITX-Saemaeul / Mugunghwa from Yongsan Station | 2.5 hr to Daecheon Station | ₩20,000 each way | More comfortable than bus. Festival shuttle from station. |
| Day tour from Seoul | Full day (7am–11pm) | ₩90,000–140,000 | Transport + festival wristband + lunch included. |
Where to Stay (Daecheon vs. Day Trip)
Daecheon Beach hotels and pensions sell out 3–6 months ahead during festival weekends. If you didn't book early, your options are:
- Daecheon Beach hotels: Sea-view rooms ₩150,000–300,000/night during festival. Book at least 2 months ahead.
- Boryeong city center: 10 min taxi from the beach, cheaper hotels available even close to dates.
- Seoul base + day trip: Easier than it sounds. Take the early bus (6am) and last bus back (10pm) — you get the full festival day plus the night concerts.
- Daejeon: 1 hr by car if Boryeong is fully booked. Bigger hotel inventory.

Day Tours & Packages
For most international visitors, a guided day tour from Seoul is the easiest way to do Boryeong without a car. They handle transport, festival wristband, and a Korean lunch.
- Klook Seoul → Boryeong Mud Festival Day Tour — group tour, English-speaking guide, festival admission included, around ₩90,000–130,000.
- Trip.com mud festival bundles — sometimes paired with a Daecheon Beach overnight.

Practical Tips: What to Wear, What to Bring
- Wear old swimwear. Mud stains never fully come out. Bring something you don't mind ruining.
- Waterproof phone case. Phones die instantly when mud gets in the charging port. ₩5,000 cases are sold all over the festival, but bring your own to be safe.
- Sandals over barefoot. The streets get hot and gravelly. Cheap rubber sandals are sold at the festival but they're sized for Korean feet.
- Sunscreen — applied before mud. The mud is opaque so you can't see if you're burning. Apply SPF 50 in the morning before getting muddy.
- Bring a small backpack you can wash. Lockers exist but are limited. Most people use a cheap waterproof bag they can rinse.
- Cash + T-money. Many beachfront vendors are cash-only. Top up your T-money card before leaving Seoul for buses and trains.
- Don't drive during festival weekend. Daecheon traffic is gridlocked. Public transit + walking is faster.
Other Korean Summer Festivals to Pair
If you're already in Korea for summer, consider stacking other warm-weather events:
- Busan Sea Festival — early August, beach + concerts + fireworks in Haeundae and Gwangalli.
- Daegu Chimac Festival — late July, chicken & beer outdoor festival.
- All Korea Festivals 2026 — full year-round festival calendar.
- Seoul 7-Day Itinerary — base in Seoul and day-trip to Boryeong.
FAQ
When is Boryeong Mud Festival 2027?
Official 2027 dates are typically announced by Boryeong city in March 2027. Based on the past decade's pattern, expect a 10-day window in mid-to-late July 2027.
Is the mud actually clean?
Yes — it's filtered, mineral-rich Boryeong mud, the same source used in Korean skincare brands. There's a dedicated mud-quality control team during the festival.
Do I need to speak Korean?
No. Boryeong is by far the most foreigner-oriented Korean festival — signage is bilingual, staff at major activities speak basic English, and around 30% of visitors are international.
Is it safe? Drinking? Crowds?
Generally yes. The middle weekend is extremely crowded but well-policed. The night concerts get rowdy but no rougher than any beachfront music festival elsewhere.
What if it rains?
The festival continues. Most activities are mud-based anyway — getting wet is expected. Concerts may be paused for safety in heavy thunderstorms.
Is it free to enter?
Beach and concert areas are free. Mud Experience Land requires a wristband (₩10,000–15,000). Most other small activities are pay-per-use.
