Boryeong Mud Festival 2026: Dates, Tickets, How to Get There & What to Expect
Imagine 3 million people throwing mud at each other on a Korean beach. That's the Boryeong Mud Festival — Korea's most famous summer event and one of the biggest parties in Asia. Held every July on Daecheon Beach in Boryeong (보령), about 2.5 hours from Seoul, it draws massive crowds of Koreans and international visitors for a weekend of mud wrestling, mud slides, live music, and beach parties.
The festival started in 1998 as a marketing campaign for Boryeong's mineral-rich mud cosmetics. It worked — the mud is legitimately good for your skin, and the festival became Korea's most internationally attended event. Here's everything you need to plan your 2026 trip.

|---|---|---|
| Full Festival Period | Jul 10–19, 2026 (Fri–Sun) | 10 days of events |
| Peak Weekend | Jul 17–19 (Fri–Sun) | Main events, biggest crowds, best atmosphere |

What to Expect
The Boryeong Mud Festival is part beach party, part sports festival, part K-pop concert. Here's what a typical day looks like:
During the Day (10:00–18:00)
- Mud Experience Zone — the main attraction. Giant inflatable mud slides, mud wrestling rings, mud pools, and mud obstacle courses set up on Daecheon Beach
- Mud Flats — natural tidal mud flats where you can cover yourself head to toe in Boryeong's mineral-rich grey mud
- Beach swimming — Daecheon is a proper sandy beach with clean water. Swim to rinse off between mud sessions
- Coloured mud zone — throw coloured mud at each other (think Korean Holi festival)
- Mud cosmetics — try Boryeong's famous mud masks, soaps, and skin products at festival stalls
At Night (19:00–late)
- Live music stage — K-pop performances, indie bands, DJs
- Fireworks — on weekend nights over the ocean
- Beach bars & food stalls — chicken, beer, seafood, Korean street food
- Dance parties — the beach turns into an open-air club

What to Bring
Essentials
- Old clothes you don't mind ruining — white t-shirt is classic (great for photos)
- Waterproof phone case — you WILL get mud on your phone
- Waterproof bag — for wallet, passport, electronics
- Flip flops or water shoes — the beach is sandy but mud zones are slippery
- Towel — one for the mud, one clean for after
- Sunscreen — July in Korea is 30°C+ and sunny
- Change of clothes — you'll want fresh clothes for the trip home
- Cash — at least 50,000 KRW for food, activities, and transport
Don't Bring
- Expensive jewellery or watches
- Nice clothes or shoes
- Anything you can't wash or replace
Practical Tips
- Go with a group. Mud wrestling and mud fights are better with friends. Solo travellers often join groups of other foreigners — it's very social.
- Arrive early. The mud zones get packed after noon. Get there by 10:00 for shorter queues.
- Shower facilities exist but expect 30+ minute queues in the afternoon. Many people just swim in the ocean to rinse off.
- Hydrate. July in Korea is hot and humid (30–35°C). Drink water constantly. Beer and soju will dehydrate you fast.
- Lockers are limited. Travel light and leave valuables at your accommodation.
- The mud is safe. Boryeong mud is mineral-rich and actually beneficial for skin. It won't stain most fabrics permanently if washed within a day.
- Bring bug spray. Mosquitoes come out at dusk near the beach.
Combine with Other Destinations
If you're making the trip to Chungcheong province, consider extending your stay:

| Daejeon | 1.5h bus | Korea's science city, great food scene, Yuseong hot springs |
| Gongju | 1h bus | Baekje Kingdom UNESCO heritage sites |
| Buyeo | 1.5h bus | Ancient Baekje capital, Nakhwaam cliff, lotus festival (July!) |
| Taean Coast | 1h drive | Stunning coastal national park, quieter beaches |

FAQ
When is the Boryeong Mud Festival 2026?
Expected mid-to-late July 2026 (around Jul 10–19). Official dates are typically announced in May. We'll update this page when confirmed.
Is the Mud Festival worth it?
If you enjoy festivals, beach parties, and don't mind getting messy — absolutely yes. It's unlike anything else in Korea. If you prefer quiet, cultural travel, this isn't your event.
Can I do it as a day trip from Seoul?
Technically yes (2.5h each way), but you'd miss the nightlife and beach party which are half the fun. One overnight is ideal; two nights if you want the full experience.
Is it safe?
Very safe. Heavy police and medical presence. The mud is tested and safe for skin. The main risks are sunburn, dehydration, and hangovers.
Is it crowded?
Extremely, especially the peak weekend. Over 3 million visitors over the festival period. That's part of the fun. Weekdays are significantly less crowded.
Is there an age limit?
No. Families with kids attend during the day. The evening beach party atmosphere is more adult-oriented (drinking, loud music).
